What Is the Kyamwilu Antigravity Site?

Officially known as the Kyamwilu Antigravity Site and certified by Machakos County Tourism, this is a gravity hill — a stretch of road where the surrounding landscape creates an optical illusion that makes the slope appear to run the wrong way. Pour water on the road and it seems to flow uphill. Put your car in neutral on the hill and it appears to roll against gravity. The effect works because the horizon line is obscured by the surrounding terrain, tricking your eyes into misreading the true downhill direction.

Getting There

Kyamwilu is approximately 15 km from Tea Tot Hotel — about 20 minutes by road. Follow the Machakos–Kitui highway past Kyamwilu market and look for the signposted turn-off. Entry to the site is free. Our front desk can give you current directions or connect you with a local driver (expect to pay around KES 500–800 for a return trip by boda-boda or taxi).

What to Bring

A bottle of water to demonstrate the uphill effect (pour it slowly on the road surface). A ball also works well and is easier to photograph. The site itself is a roadside stop rather than a formal park — there are no facilities, so carry snacks and water from the hotel.

Best Time to Go

The illusion is visible any time of day, but morning light makes it easier to photograph and the road is less busy. Combine the stop with a longer drive into the Ukambani highlands for a half-day outing from Machakos.

A Word on the Science

Gravity hills exist in several countries and have been studied in detail. The effect is entirely optical — measurements with a spirit level confirm the road slopes the way you'd expect. That said, experiencing it in person is genuinely disorienting, and it makes for a memorable conversation at dinner back at ANAM Restaurant.
